They come here to await death, sometimes for years on end. Because, to die in Kashi – usually known as Varanasi – is to gain the privilege of never again being subjected to rebirth, never come back to live as an animal. It is the promise of directly attaining
the Hindu paradise where neither joy nor suffering exist. They await this salvation, on the banks of the Ganges, in the “city of light”.
