Transhumance, movement at risk
Catalogue of the exposition
First prize winner in the 1997 World Press Photo awards for his photographic work with the nomadic peoples between Mali and Mauritania, Gilles Coulon has repeated the experience 20 years later, in partnership with the NGO Acting For Life*, following several groups of breeders in their transhumance between Fada N’Gourma, in the east of Burkina Faso, and Kara in Togo. He has related their itineraries and the many difficulties they encountered. Walking with the breeders, sharing their daily life over several weeks, he witnessed the risks of their movement along routes where the farmers encounter local people in the regions through which they travel. This exhibition, made with the support of Central Dupon Images, is accompanied by a catalogue.
* The NGO Acting for Life has developed several programmes to support agro-pastoralism over the past ten years. These have benefitted over a million people in various countries in West Africa.
