  • What circus ?

A photographic documentary led to this publication. At first, a newspaper employing Philippe Lopparelli and Marie-Pierre Losfeld commissioned them to work on the circus and their discovery of this new environment was a revelation!
Realising that they shared the same passion, they decided to continue this adventure without a commissioner and so they went to explore an environment which is considered by many as enigmatic, larger than life and somewhat cut off from the world. During two years they lived with a traditional circus, following the tours and discovering the ins and outs of the stage and backstage in an attempt to transcribe into pictures and writings the spirit, atmosphere and imaginary world of an art which is two hundred years old. Their photography evokes the idea that this unique art perpetrates an ideal: that of daily efforts which have survived in an age where people are mostly drawn towards contemporary forms of entertainment.
