In February 2001 in Chiapas, after seven years of struggling against the regime, the Zapatistas wanted to bring about negotiations with the new Mexican government, so they embarked on a 3000 kilometre peace march towards Mexico City. These photographs capture the immense movement of hope which was to come up against a corrupt and paralysed political system, and document the civil resistance which could be seen throughout the entire country in people’s friendly gestures, expressions, and in the support of thousands of people who gathered by the side of this long road to freedom…
